In 1967, the Walter Reed Organization release a remake of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, entitled GULLIVER'S TRAVELS BEYOND THE MOON. In this Japanease animated feature from Toei Studios, Dr. Lemuel Gulliver travels through space to find an undiscovered star, but learns that it has more dangers than what he encountered on his previous adventures.
The story opens on a storm night where a young boy named Rickey is caught sneaking into the movies to watch Gulliver's Travels. The angry ushers throws the boy out and the poor lad is left all alone, or so he thinks. He soon makes friends with talking pug dog named Pudge and a talking toy soldier known as the Colonel . The canine invites the pair to spend some time at the local amusement park.
They sneak in and attempt to ride the rides. The problem is, there is no power. The Colonel goes to the front office to ask that the power be turned on. The only persons that he finds are some security guards who chase the group all over the park and into the fireworks storehouse, where they set off one of the skyrockets and Rickey, Pudge and the Colonel are sent on a wild ride through the night skies.
They eventually land near a house. There they are met by Slyvester the crow and his owner, Dr. Lemuel Gulliver. Dr. Gulliver shows the group his new rocketship, and confesses his desire to travel to an undiscovered star which he calls the Star Of Hope. He hopes to find a crew to travel with him on this mission. Rickey and his mates want to make the journey, but he old scientist is relunctant. He finally agrees, and after many months of training and preparation, Dr. Gulliver and his crew are ready to make their journey. The group is jubilant about the trip, and they head for the rocket to the tune of "The Gulliver March."
During their journey, the party is soon trapped in the Reverse Time Nebula. The clock moves backwards too fast and Rickey is turned into a baby. Pudge is turned into a puppy. Slyvester is turned into an egg and Gulliver becomes a young man again. Luckily for the party, a strange space ship uses it's power ray to take the rocketship and it's crew out of the dangerous time neubla. Gulliver tries to communicate with the strange ship but it flies off before he can learn its identity.
The rocketship "Gulliver" is nearing the Star Of Hope, but it is soon caught by another strange ray and is being pulling into the orbit of another planet. Caught by the soldiers of this strange realm, our heroic adventurers are checked out by the planet's scientists and they try to find out if these creatures are robots. Needless to say, Gulliver and his crew are angry at being mistreated by these people, until their identities are revealed by the person whose ship had saved them from the Reverse Time Nebula: the Princess of the Realm. (The Princess' voice is performed by former "Little Rascal" Darla Hood).
The Princess apologizes for the mistreatment and invites the gang to the royal palace for dinner with her father, the King. The King is glad to meet the visitors from earth. The meal is little more than pills that are popped into the mouths of the diners via a rubber syringe. Gulliver and his crew are puzzled by this strange form of eating. The King, his daughter and their royal court are also interested in learning about the people of earth and their ways of life. Rickey, Pudge, the Colonel and Sylvester explain about it in a song called "The Story Of Earth."
Suddenly, an alarm is sounded and the King and his people shudder at the sound. Unaware of the danger that awaits them, Gulliver asks, "What is going on here, your majesty?" The king sadly relates that many years ago, the scientists of his planet had created robots to do their work and their robots complied with their request. Eventually, machines rebelled and the robots attacked the King and his people, forcing them to leave the Star of Hope, their former realm, and move to the second planet in their solar system. Despite the move, the robots continue to attack them and threaten their lives. A robotic plane is soon seen streaking across the skies and despite the efforts of the King's forces. the robotic plane shoots and kills the soldiers. Terrifed, the King, the Princess, the Royal Court and Gulliver and his crew are forced into hiding. The Robotic plane infiltrates the palace and kidnaps the Princess and Pudge.
Outraged, Gulliver, the Colonel, Sylvester and Rickey make plans to head for the Star Of Hope to save their friends. Finding out that water can destroy the robots, they fuel up their spaceship and after obtaining water rifles the Gulliver lands on the planet and before long Rickey and his friends destroy the entire robotic army. They also destroy the robot-making factories and help the princess escape from the interior of the head robot. The poor girl is unconcious. Rickey pours some water onto her face, but the Pricesses' clothes fall off and she is left standing only in her slip and panties.
The Princess now covered by Gulliver's coat, he reveals that the King and his people have turned themselves into robots. Ricky knew this as well as I did. Looking at the rising dawn, Gulliver states with optomism, "There is hope for this planet Rickey. They can lead themselves more successfully now." The scene then shifts back to the street outside of the movie theater. It is morning and it is clear that Rickey's trip into outer space with Gulliver was nothing more than a dream. Rickey runs off into the morning and the film ends with a reprise of the movie's theme song, "Think Tall!"

I first saw GULLIVER'S TRAVELS BEYOND THE MOON at the Dale Theater in the Bronx, N.Y., back in the fall of 1967. I enjoyed watching the movie, which I have now seen many times, both in the movies and on TV. It still entertains me to this day. The animation is not all that great, but the script is entertaining and the voice-acting is good. The songs and music for the film was written and arranged by Anne & Milton Delugg (Milton Delugg was the bandleader who had worked on NBC's "Broadway Open House" with Morey Amserdam and Jerry Lester, and on Paul Winchell's "Winchell/Mahoney Show" during the 1950's. Delugg also wrote some songs for Bob Keeshan's "Captain Kangaroo" TV show, and for Soupy Sales kids' records I was lucky enough to meet Darla Hood at the "Sons Of The Desert" first annual Convention in Chicago, Ill. during the summer of 1978. Ms. Hood told me that she enjoyed working on the film and was glad that I remembered her work as a cartoon voiceover artist.
